Born May 29, 1921, to Robert and Katherine Searl in a sod house on the family farm 10 miles northwest of Loverna, Saskatchewan, Velma grew up with three older brothers, Vinson, Melvin and Alvin, and a younger sister Olive.

Terry died suddenly on May 15, 2020, at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary at the age of 67. He was born in Calgary on February 6, 1953, the elder son of Staffania and Alex Hanewich.
