Munroe: Allan D., Sept. 29, 1934 - April 20, 2020

Allan Duncan Munroe, beloved husband of Gwen M. Munroe, died at the Masterpiece Southlands Meadows in Medicine Hat, AB., April 20, 2020, at the age of 85 years.

Allan was born in Cereal, AB., to Howard and Annie Munroe, attending grade school and graduated from high school in Oyen, AB. He went on to attend SAIT in Calgary, AB., obtaining his Autobody certification. Allan worked for nine years as an autobody repairman in Calgary with Freeman Wilson.

Allan married the love of his life, Gwen Mary Alene Fizer at the United Church in Sibbald, AB., on November 10, 1954. After moving to Moose Jaw, SK., in 1961, he became the Head Instructor of the Auto Body program with the Moose Jaw Technical Institute. In 1967, the family moved to Accra, Ghana, West Africa for 15 months where Allan helped set up and teach the autobody mechanics program. Following his return to Moose Jaw, he attended classes over the next few years and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelors of Education from the University of Saskatchewan.

Allan belonged to Toastmasters International advancing to District Governor of Saskatchewan and Alberta, with District 42 from 1978-1979.

In his youth he played hockey and enjoyed golf but especially loved watching football and curling.

Allan garnered many achievements in his life including being promoted to Shop Director in 1961 with the Moose Jaw Technical Institute, obtaining his BE from the University of Saskatchewan in 1971, and becoming the Potentate of the Wa Wa Shriners in Regina 1989.

He was a gentle man who enjoyed being around people with good conversation and a little humor on the side. Allan loved to play the saxophone with various bands; was a long standing member of the Shriners and Masons participating in many Stampede parades including the Motor Patrol. His admiration for cars was second to none and he loved touring in his motorhome with Gwen while wintering in the United States for many years together.

Allan’s memory will be treasured in the hearts of his wife of 66 years, Gwen; daughter, Carrie (Norman) Hopkins; daughter-in-law, Peggy Munroe; grandchildren, James (Carli) Munroe, Sean Munroe (Jessica Anderson), Abbey Hopkins (Stefen Ursulan), Evan Hopkins; great-grandchildren, Emma Barton, Austin Barton, Ethan Munroe, Jaxon Munroe, Isla Munroe; sister-in-law, Kay Munroe as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Allan was predeceased by his son, Colin; parents, Howard and Annie and siblings, Ken, Connie and Mervin.

The Celebration of Allan’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street SW, Medicine Hat, on Friday, September 4, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating.
