Munroe: Kathleen, October 23, 1932 - August 18, 2020
It is with immense sadness that the family of Kathleen Myrtle Munroe announce her death on August 18, 2020, at the age of 88.
Kay was born on October 23, 1932, near Esther, Alberta. She grew up and attended elementary school in New Brigden, and then lived in the dorm in Oyen for her high school years. She married Mervin Munroe on November 8, 1950; they were married for 58 years.
They moved to Sibbald in 1953, back to Oyen in 1958, then to Drumheller in 1959 and finally settled in Calgary in 1967 until the present. Kay worked at Woolco for several years and then took secretarial upgrading at Henderson College. She was hired at Western Geophysical and later moved to Alberta Gas Trunk Line which became Nova Corporation. Kay retired from Nova in 1989, after 14 years of service. Kay and Merv enjoyed their retirement years, spending many winters in Apache Junction, AZ. They travelled extensively through the United States and Eastern Canada. Other holidays took them to Alaska, Hawaii, cruises to the Virgin Islands and through the Panama Canal. Kay also travelled to China and Austria. Throughout her life, Kay was active in Eastern Star, Kinettes and volunteered on many boards and entertainment committees at the condo in Calgary and in Apache Junction. She will be greatly missed by her immediate and extended family and her many neighbours and friends.
Kay passed away after a swift battle with cancer. Right to the end she shared her wit and smiles with her sons, grandchildren and sister.
Kay was blessed with three sons, Kevin (Ruth), Cameron and Greg. Five grandchildren Shawna, Chad, Jackie, Tori and Kyla, and two great-granddaughters Jayla and Kinsey. Kay will be fondly remembered by all of them as well as by her sister Reatha Hanson and sister-in-law Gwen Munroe and many, many nieces and nephews which she took great lengths to visit and stay in touch with over the years. Kay was a great lady, always welcoming and cheerful, an amazing caring person, and the life of the party. When you share stories, holidays and gatherings and reminisce, you’ll remember Kay’s love for music and dance, her style, her quick tongue and wit, her contagious laugh and fun times. She was always ready for a bit of entertainment and up for any activity.
Kay was predeceased by her parents Myrtle and Robert Herron, brother and sister-in-law Melvin and Margaret Herron, sister and brother-in-law Darlene and Bud Wagstaff, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ken and Pat Munroe, brother-in-law Allan Munroe and sister-in-law Connie Smith, as well as her special friend Howard Ferguson.
A Celebration of Kathleen’s life will be held at a later date.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society.
