Walter was born on January 5, 1921, in Western Ukraine. He came to Canada in 1928 with his two younger brothers when his mother immigrated to join her husband. Growing up in the Acadia Valley, Benton and Oyen area of eastern Alberta, the family acquired land in the Birch Hill district in the Viking/Vegreville area in 1944. Marrying Anne Petruk in 1946, Walter started his own farming operation in the Lorendale district, north of Viking. During the winters of 1957-58 and 1958-59 he attended the Calgary Technical Institute (now SAIT) to acquire a vocation in the electrical field. In the spring of 1959 Walter obtained employment with the City of Calgary Electric Light Dept. (now Enmax) as an apprentice and eventually attained the position of System Operator in the Control Centre. In 1979 Walter took early retirement and with Anne moved onto their honeymoon farm in the Lorendale district. They subsequently spent five winters in Arizona, made numerous trips abroad, and motor-homed throughout Alberta, British Columbia and western Saskatchewan. In 1993 Walter and Anne moved back to Calgary to reside in the Brentwood district. Walter enjoyed visiting with family and friends and doing genealogy.
