Edwards: Marguerite, Dec. 5, 1928 – April 23, 2020

Marguerite Patricia Edwards born December 5, 1928, in Esther, Alberta, lived 91 wonderful years. She died in her sleep April 23, 2020, in Oyen, Alberta, the town she called home for most of her life.

Marguerite grew up on the family farm just north-west of Esther. The youngest daughter of Rose and Steve Heaney she was predeceased by five sisters and one brother.

She will forever be remembered by her four kids Gwynn, Darcy, Kim, and Conrad who were all fortunate to have kids of their own who loved their grandma greatly.

In her younger years she had met a young man Dennis Edwards at a dance. After that brief encounter they didn’t see each other till years later at which point they fell in love, married, lived a family farm just north of Oyen. They raised purebred Herefords and cereal crops. Later they began to race quarter horses which brought the family together and added a spark of excitement and thrill.

January 4, 2000, Dennis died after a long battle with cancer. Marguerite decided it was the perfect time to move into Oyen. During this time she developed her passion for golf, and gardening.

While watching the hot air balloons during a beautiful morning in the Palm Springs area, Marguerite said, “When I turn 90 I want to go up in one of those balloons!” She was 88. The family said maybe we should do that now. She said, “No, when I turn 90.” Marguerite got her wish. They flew December 4, 2018, a day before her 90th birthday. She said, “Now I know what a bird feels like.” She loved that trip.

Even at the ripe young age of 91 years, she had her wits. She still golfed—a fierce competitor she was; she loved to win. She floor curled, and volunteered countless hours in the town she loved. She wasn’t one to shy away from a glass of wine with family and good friends while trying to beat everyone at a game of cards. Her ability to light up every room with her smile and laugh was contagious.

Marguerite approached life with such ease and curiosity. She likely didn’t even realize how much she inspired and taught her family, just by being her unique and loving self. “She was a huge light in all our lives, and we will forever cherish the moments we had with her. We all find peace that she had control of her mind, body, and spirit right up until the end.”

Marguerite is survived by her children: Gwynn (Sharon) Edwards, Darcy (Pam) Edwards, Kim (Paul) Edwards, Conrad (Amy) Edwards, and Jane Edwards. Marguerite will also be forever lovingly remembered by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jamie (Tara) Edwards Charlotte and Mackenzie, Rob Edwards, Justin (Maja) Edwards, Preston and Emilia, Jesse (Barbara) Edwards, Cashlin and Rosy, Joel Edwards. Bree (Shannon) Edwards, Emmaline, Mitch (Ashton) Baker, Brigden Edwards and Ever Edwards.

Forever missed but always in our hearts, our angel in disguise Marguerite Edwards.

A celebration of Marguerite’s life will be held in Oyen once it is safe.
