THE DELIA GAZETTE: CBC is coming to the Delia Library on February 2

By Lonni Pedneault

The town hall meeting with Damien Kurek, MP, on January 17 at the Delia Drop-In Centre was well attended by concerned Delians and neighbouring communities. Of course, one of the topics of discussion was the Energy Emergency Alert last weekend and about how ill-prepared Alberta is for such emergencies. People had a chance to ask questions about issues that concerned them, and Damien was well-spoken and well-prepared. He left with assurances that people are always welcome to send emails with questions or concerns, and his office will respond as soon as possible.

The last paint night of the Christmas gnome was such a hit that the Library hosted another paint night on the 16th by popular demand! This time, the picture was of a red tree with a full moon in the background. It's interesting to see how each picture turns out unique even though everyone is following the same 'model' picture. The refreshments are a pretty tasty touch, too! Appreciation to the Library for hosting these fun events!

Karen from the Drumheller Family and Community Support Services visited the Delia Drop In Centre on January 18 to share information about the Heart to Home Meal program for seniors and shut-ins. More information will be available at the Drop In Centre soon. She is also working on bringing a guest speaker to Delia on January 25. With the exception of private bookings, the events at the Delia Drop In Centre are open to everyone over 18.

The Delia Drop In Centre has begun drop-in morning chair exercises for seniors every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10 am.

The Delia Curling Club has their next Wing Night on January 25 and is open to everyone to enjoy while watching some curling or just take them home to nibble on.

CBC is coming to Delia! The Alberta Library and CBC partnered for a project to visit rural Alberta communities, and the Delia Library was chosen as one of the libraries and communities for CBC to visit. This takes place Friday, February 2, and the Library is jointly hosting fun family events within our community.

The day's events include:

  • A Winter Fest from 1 - 4 pm with several stations at Delia School. Families are invited to attend and take part in the fun and festivities!

  • The Historical Museum will be hosting an Open House from 4 - 5 pm!

  • A Winter Feast begins at 5 pm at the Community Centre and is sponsored by CBC, Village of Delia, and Friends of the Delia Library. There is a capacity limit of 200, so please be sure to let Leah know if you and your family are planning to attend by January 24. The dinner menu is beef on a bun, salad and dessert prepared by Day Lenfesty

  • A free family Snowman Bingo with prizes follows the Winter Feast!

CBC is sponsoring many of the events, making it free for everyone to participate. If you have questions or would like to be put on the supper list, please contact Leah or Tiffannie at the Library: 403-364-3777.

Volunteers are needed to man the Winter Fest stations (some indoors, some outside), especially the craft stations. If you are able to help out, please sign up with Leah.

The Library is also hosting a pie and refreshment social for adults to have a chat with CBC from 1 - 3 pm that day. Everyone is welcome. The CBC looks forward to chatting with residents and surrounding community members.

The Delia and District Historical Society has their AGM on February 8 at the Drop In Centre, starting with a potluck supper at 6 pm, followed by the Annual General Meeting, and everyone is welcome to join.

The Delia Drop In Centre will be hosting a Valentine's Pot Luck on February 13 (the day before Valentine's). The Kittler Band will provide beautiful music on the piano and accordion and may bring additional musical guests. Watch for posters on FB and around town for more information.

Please note, too, that the Wed night cards and pool at the Drop In Centre will be temporarily suspended until further notice.

February 17 is Random Acts Of Kindness Day! Would love to hear some examples to share in the Gazette!

To receive the free monthly Delia & District Events calendar in your email, please let me know, and if you have any news or shareable tidbits about people, places or events in our community, please email me at alonni1199@gmail.com. Until next time, stay well and enjoy life!
