HAND HILLS GRAPEVINE: Don’t let the old man in!
By Marilyn Vredegoor
Hello Hand Hills! Well, we made it through that terrible cold spell. It's still cold here today (Friday), but we will take -26 over that -40. But with the warmer temperatures came that nasty north wind. It is definitely winter in the Hills!
I want to thank Ron Walton for this piece of information that he sent me. It seems the Waltons' too, have been doing some late, late-season farming. A couple of days before New Year's and on New Year's Day, Ron could be found out in the tractor disking up a storm. The little bit of rain helped the process out. Now, this is definitely history; as I said before, I don't think that disking has happened that late in the season in the Hills or at Homestead Coulee, but the more important part of this story is Ron in the Tractor! Ron was in a terrible accident in August of 2022 and spent four or more months in the hospital. The recovery has been slow and frustrating, but hearing that Ron is doing farm-related activities is a testament to his grit and determination to get on the road to recovery. Ron has a story to tell about the life-changing accident, and it is something that anyone in his predicament should hear. Anyone, for that matter! So happy to hear that you got to be a farmer again, Ron! Keep up the hard work and spread that most important message of yours, Ron …Never give up and look for that sunny side of the tragedies of life.
This brings to mind my new favourite song! Toby Keith wrote this song about seven years ago. In his conversation with Clint Eastwood, Toby asked Clint how he has managed to stay afloat all these years, and Clint coined the phrase, Don't Let the Old Man In! The song is about death being the old man and that it is up to us to fight to keep going in this life even when he might come knocking. We can weather almost any storm if we really try. It says to love, stay close to friends and family and enjoy every sunset and sunrise. Ron, you reminded me of this, so I thank you. Listen to the song and live by it!
The Annual Club Meeting is January 25th at 7. Plan to attend! Elections will take place, and the 2024 Calendar of Events will be on the agenda. Come give us your input!
Valentine Dinner and Dance is February 10th. More plans will follow. But mark it on your calendar.
Until more volunteers commit, I have put the Elmer School Reunion on Hold! I know that everyone is busy and that the weather played a part in getting together, so I will just wait and hopefully hear from more volunteers. Give me a call or message me on Facebook. Thanks to Rod, Susan and Pam for their interest.
Till next week – enjoy the winter weather. Pray for more snow and enjoy and fight thru whatever life throws at you.
