Oyen and District Seniors Report: First Pot Luck supper

By Beth Symes

Eleven people who came to the first Pot Luck supper of the New Year enjoyed various Crock Pot dishes. The supper was followed by the meeting, which Lynda called to order at 7:07. Some people left after the supper, but others came to the meeting, which was attended by fourteen members. Marilyn Kroker won the $12 50/50 draw and donated the winnings back to the organization. The business meeting then commenced with the minutes from November 6, 2024, and the financial statements for November and December being presented.

Lynda provided an update on the use of the New Horizons Grant, which was designated for outdoor and indoor beautification of the Seniors Recreation Centre. Plants and grasses will be purchased in the spring to continue the work that began in the summer and fall. Also, some repairs to lighting will be completed inside the building. In addition to that Grant, she reported that the Seniors Association has received a grant from the Special Areas since the last meeting. The UFA also gave the Association a gift card for Christmas. Fundraising will continue with a Casino being organized by Bev Heeg. This will take place in Red Deer on May 21 and 22. Application forms are available for this Casino's five helper positions; one was completed at the meeting.

There was further discussion on updating the By-Laws, which will continue at the next meeting; no final decisions were made at this meeting. Lynda had purchased a book that will be used as a memorial book to commemorate past members as an alternate means of remembrance to the plaques that hang in the hall. Kenna has the book now and will use her artistic talents to prepare it before adding the first names.

The Fun Night on November 29 had a lower attendance than usual. Many people who usually attend were away on that weekend, and it conflicted with other events in the area. However, the six people who attended had fun either watching a hockey game or playing several games of Sequence.   The next Fun Night will be at the Seniors Recreation Centre on January 31. The other regular activities have resumed following the December interruption as well. Floor Curling continues on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM until the end of April. Two new floor curlers joined us on January 8, so it is not too late to begin this activity in this New Year. People are gathering to play pickleball on Thursday evenings. Crafting hosted by Cheryl Getz will also continue with dates being set on Jan 21 and 28 and Feb 18 and 25. If you are a Senior (50+), please consider joining us for one or more of these activities as something new in 2025. For further information, call Lynda at 403-664-0908 or Beth at 403-664-2462.
