Hand Hills Grapevine News: Adventure
Go on an adventure every chance you get!
By Marilyn Vredegoor
Hello Hand Hills....October is flying by. Does every one else feel that 2023 is slipping away fast? Still no rain but I figure if it is not going to rain, we might as well have nice Fall weather. And that it has been. Except for those Terrorist Bugs (maple bugs) it has been good. Weaning and cattle moving will be on the agenda for the Ranchers. Hockey, figure skating and dance are going to fill the time for a lot of people. Enjoy it all!
It is a very exciting time for Cody and Susie Knight from Lacombe. On September 22nd they welcome their first child, Myles Franklin. First time grandparents are Tim and Carol Lenfesty of Craigmyle. Welcome to the best Club in the world! Carla, Joey and David now have the official title of Aunt and Uncles. Martha and Albert Viste were gifted a great grandchild. Congratulations to everyone.
Raymond Sieppert and his three daughters, Michelle, Sandy and Deanna, went on a father/daughter trip. They toured Jasper and the Columbia Ice Fields and points in between. What a wonderful thing to do together!
Raymond, Tony and I went on another kind of adventure this past week. We went over on the east side of Hand Hills Lake and Ray filled us in on where everyone used to live, way back when. The first stop was the sight of the Kelm's homestead, this was where his Mother was raised. All that is left is a small row of maple tress, a few caragana trees and the horseradish. Ray remembers his Mother tell him that one Spring they could hear the crashing of the ice on the Lake and when they went upstairs in the house they could see the ice piled high on the south end of the Lake. Must have been quite a site, as they lived a mile south and a half a mile east of the Lake.
On our trip familiar names like Shandera, Preston, Gall, Gibson, Harrison and Millard were mentioned. Ray went to the Hand Hills Lake School for only two months but it warranted a picture with the sign. The other three schools he attended are for another road trip. Stay tuned.
Another interesting tidbit that Ray mentioned was that the Hanna Boat Club had a boat launch on the east side of the Lake. You guessed it, he had a pretty good idea where it was and again, off we went. We found a likely spot but would sure love if maybe the Hanna Museum or anyone would have any information to curb our curiosity. It was a great tour. Ray is a wealth of knowledge.
I am trying to remember all that he told me yesterday and he can recall from 60 or 70 years ago! How does that work?
See you at the Work Bee on Saturday and get your appetite ready for the Best Turkey Supper around on Sunday the 22nd.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
Till next week...go on adventure ever chance you get. Everyday should be a celebration. Laugh, enjoy, live it up and jump right in!
