BYEMOOR ENDIANG NEWS: Isabel Nixon celebrates 100th Birthday

By Les and Rosemary Stulberg

The main topic of conversation lately is of course the cold weather. The mild weather we were enjoying disappeared quickly as a polar vortex plunged the province into frigid temperatures, reminiscent of Januarys in the olden days.

Schools were closed, mail delivery to the rural areas didn’t run, some events were cancelled and in town some businesses chose to close. On the farms it was chores as usual, as livestock needed extra care during the severe cold and frozen water lines needed to be thawed. Thankfully power and oil and gas workers did their jobs to keep us warm.

Belated Happy Birthday wishes are sent to Isabel Nixon who celebrated her 100th Birthday on December 13. Her family helped her celebrate her special occasion at her Points West residence in Stettler.

Isabel (nee Campbell) was raised on a farm near Byemoor and married a local boy, Glenn Nixon. The couple farmed in the Hackett district (between Byemoor and Botha) for many years and raised their family there. Glenn and Isabel later retired to Stettler.

Congratulations on your remarkable milestone and best wishes for many more, Isabel. Mrs. Nixon has probably seen many changes in her 100 years of life and would have many stories to tell.

The Endmoor U11 hockey team hosted its home tournament on the Jan. 13-14 weekend at the Endmoor Arena in Byemoor despite the cold weather with teams coming from Delburne and Bashaw.

The funeral service for long-time Byemoor resident, Bob Jones, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. at the Byemoor Community Hall. Bob passed away on Jan. 2 at the age of 83 years.

There’s lots of hockey action scheduled for the Endmoor Arena coming up. On Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. it’s Central Alberta Selects AA vs. Camrose AA. On Feb. 3 at 3 p.m. it’s Central Alberta Selects AA vs. Medicine Hat AA. On Feb. 4 at 9:30 a.m. it’s Endmoor U9 vs. Spruce View, also on Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. it’s Endmoor U11 vs. Oyen and on Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. it’s Endmoor U9 vs. Oyen.

Keep in mind its time to enter your curling team in the Farmer’s Bonspiel at the Byemoor Curling Club’s annual ‘spiel coming up Jan. 29 – Feb. 3 in Byemoor. Phone your entries to Eugene Nixon at 403-742-9616 or Justin Jones at 403-741-6784.

Humour for the Day

  • “There’s a time each winter when things go from magical to miserable. It’s called January.”

  • “It’s so cold my teeth were chattering all night, and I wasn’t even wearing them.”

  • “Today’s forecast is — I Can’t Feel My Face degrees.”

  • “I’m not going outside until the temperature is above my age.”

  • “Does shivering count as exercise?”

  •  “Dear Mother Nature, Having received my free sample of winter, I would like to cancel the remainder of my subscription. Thank you.”
