​Spath: Leopold Valentine, October 10, 1933 – May 21, 2019

Leo Spath was born on October 10, 1933, and lived on the family farm in the Vandyne district. He went to the Vandyne School and finished school in Acadia Valley. Leo was the son to George and Victoria Spath, the middle child of three boys.

Throughout Leo’s 85 years, he was husband to Shirley Spath for over 60 years. Leo was a proud father to four children and five grandchildren. He was a very hard working agricultural farmer and rancher for 50 plus years. He did love his cattle and his pets. Leo was an outgoing and social man that made friends wherever he went.

He lived his life to the fullest; enjoying fly-away holidays with family and friends, family camping trips, the Medicine Hat Stampede, hunting geese, deer, elk, moose, and even bear. He had a passion for sports, playing baseball, curling and playing in many summer games, winning numerous medals. He loved to bet on his favorite CFL and NHL teams and rarely lost.

Leo died at the South Health Campus Hospital in Calgary on May 21.

Leo was predeceased by his father George (1953); mother Victoria (1971); and brothers Frank (2009) and Rudy (2015).

He is survived by his loving family, his wife Shirley; daughter Brenda (Dale, Mathew and Colton); and sons Kent (Kim and Sondra), Patrick (Shirley, Damara and Jordan) and Terry (Monica).

A Prayer Vigil Service was held May 24, and the Mass of Christian Burial was held May 25 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Acadia Valley.

Officiating Clergy was Fr. Newton Rodrigues. Megan McBain was the organist and special music was provide by Scott, Steven and Tim Heeg. Readers were Laurie Burke and Joe Niwa. Pallbearers were Mathew McNamee, Colton McNamee, Jordan Spath, Darren Dirk, Dwayne Siewert, and Rodney Shubert. Honorary Pallbearers were Bob Marks, all Knights of Columbus members, and all his special friends.

Following the funeral service, family and friends were invited to a luncheon hosted by the Acadia Valley Community in the Community Hall.
