Peter Thomas Day
January 28, 1948 - October 7, 2024
Peter Thomas Day was born on 28 January 1948 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England, to the late Harry and Lillian (Wooldridge) Day; died peacefully on 7 October 2024 in Lethbridge, Alberta, after a very short battle with pancreatic cancer.
Peter, a farm boy at heart, lover of a good laugh, and a beacon of unwavering conviction — has completed his life's journey. Peter grew up in England dreaming of the vast prairies and the rugged life of cowboys, so, at twenty years old, he hopped on a boat to cross the Atlantic on his way to Alberta, Canada. It was on this voyage that Peter realized his sea legs were about as sturdy as a noodle in a stampede, vowing never to set foot on a boat again! On dry land, he quickly learned he was better at herding cattle by swinging a belt than on horseback. His adventures on the farm not only honed his resilience and work ethic but also instilled in him a remarkable ability to build or repair anything from mere scraps. This knack for creative problem-solving continued long after he left the farm, becoming a hallmark of his character.
He was a man of great faith and unshakable values, deeply devoted to his family. He married Shari Jean Nicholas in 1979, and together, they raised four wonderful children whom he loved fiercely. His devotion extended beyond his home, as he served diligently in numerous callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Whether working as a ranch hand, a genealogical photographer, or a devoted father, Peter embraced each role with dedication, love, and humility.
Peter enjoyed the simple things in life — from the laughter of family gatherings to the satisfaction of serving his neighbours, often being the first one out after a fresh snowfall, clearing not just his own yard, but the entire block with his snow blower — long before his neighbours had even woken up. He was known for his playful jokes, silly antics, and a knack for making everything more fun!
He is survived by his beloved children; Michael, Matthew, Steve (Amy MacKinnon), and his princess, Emily. They, along with his loving siblings, Ruth Hartland, Ann Perrins, Sue (John) Pittaway, David (Sheila Rumohr), brother-in-law Phillip Lamb, and his 'second family' Beth Barnett, who was like a mother to him, Brenda, Cindy, Barb, and Ron who were like siblings, having embraced him as one of their own when he first arrived in Canada — as well as his great friend, Keith Dudley, will forever remember him with fondness, laughter, and the occasional affectionate shake of the head. Numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends also survive him. Peter was predeceased by his sister, Pat Lowe in 1992; brothers-in-law, John Hartland and Phillip Perrins; and Jeff Barnett, who was like a father to him.
Per his wishes, there will be no funeral. Peter will be cremated, and his ashes interred in Esther, Alberta — a second home that has always been close to his heart.
Peter's generosity and charm will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. With his passing, the world loses a great man, but his humour and kindness will remain a lasting legacy.
