Margaret Ellen Gillis (nee Hearn)
Margaret passed away at Big Country Hospital in Oyen, AB., on the morning of October 7, 2024. She was born June 27, 1936, at Preeceville, SK., to Mabel and Walter Hearn, the youngest of their four children.
She married Paul Gillis in June 1954, and they came to Alsask in 1954. In January 1963, the family moved to Sibbald. Margaret lived in Sibbald for the next 50+ years, where she raised her family. She worked as a janitor at the Fairdale school and, when called upon, made the most fabulous pies and buns.
More recently, mom went to Benton to live with her son Alec and then in the spring of 2022, went to live at the Long Term Care Center of the Oyen Hospital, where bingo and painting were some of her favourite activities. She produced some amazing paintings.
Mom also loved knitting, gardening, canning, horses and the rodeo. In years past she could often be found with family at the rodeos operating a camcorder where her sons and grandsons were riding.
In the years during the Thanksgiving long weekend mom and dad would be at the F.C.A finals in Red Deer watching their grandsons participate.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, siblings, 2 brothers (infancy and stillbirth), Fanny, Violet Everett, Delbert, and Florence, her son Willard in 1988, and her husband Paul in 1993. She was also predeceased by Joseph and Mary Gillis (father and mother-in-law) and a great-grandson in 2023.
Mom will be forever remembered and loved by her seven remaining children: Jeanette (Gordon), Walter, Joanne, Mary (Rod), Alec, Teresa, and Allan. She will also be lovingly remembered by her 22 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grands.
