Lloyd Elvin Westerlund

December 11, 1934 - November 30, 2021

Lloyd Elvin Westerlund was born on December 11, 1934 in Loverna, Saskatchewan to loving parents, Leonard and Marjorie Westerlund. Lloyd grew up with two siblings, older brother Douglas and younger sister Linda.

Lloyd spent most of his life in the Esther area, learning from his father who was a hard working farmer and his mother who looked after the home and children. She was a wonderful cook. When Lloyd was a young boy, the family lived in the same house as Lloyd’s grandparents, Knut and Frieda Westerlund. Lloyd attended five different schools over the years until completing his grade nine education. During these years, he rode horseback to and from, a trek ranging from five to seven miles one way. Lloyd eventually attended Olds College and received his diploma in Practical Agriculture. He then pursued his passion of farming back on the family farm, raising Hereford cattle for most of his life. Along with Leonard and Doug, Lloyd was a charter member of the East Central Cattle Breeders Association (later to be called the East Central Hereford Club), selling purebred bulls for many years in the Cereal and Hanna Bull Sales. Lloyd lived and worked on the farm until moving into Oyen in March of 2017.

Lloyd met Maxine Heatherington while she was attending high school. The two fell in love and were married on December 1958 and celebrated 62 anniversaries together. Together they had two children. Their son Shane was born in 1964, and daughter Heather was born in 1969. The children are both currently farming in the Esther area. Lloyd and Maxine were blessed with four beautiful grandchildren.

Lloyd was a strong believer in the importance of volunteerism. He dedicated many hours to the community of Esther and especially enjoyed supporting the 4-H Horse and Beef Clubs which Shane and Heather participated in. One year Lloyd’s family were honoured with the 4-H Family Ride Award.

Lloyd had many leisure interests. He enjoyed the opportunity to be outdoors. In his earlier years he would ride and break horses, go on trail rides and play baseball. Lloyd was interested in leatherwork and would fix harnesses and saddles himself. He also enjoyed curling, watching rodeo, listening to music, watching television and reading. His favourite type of music was country western, the likes of Will Carter and Elvis Presley. His favourite shows were Bonanza, Ponderosa and the J.R series. He enjoyed reading western books and the Western Producer.

Lloyd was well traveled over the years. His first trip was to England during the time of his twelfth birthday with his Mother and sister Linda to visit relatives and do some sightseeing. They were there for six months and during that time Lloyd missed months of school. Since then, Lloyd also traveled across Canada and to different places in the United States, including Hawaii.

Health issues prompted a move for Lloyd and Maxine to the Oyen Lodge in 2017. They joined the Continuing Care family in the Oyen Hospital in April of 2018. There he enjoyed visiting with other residents and staff, sharing lots of interesting stories.

Lloyd’s memory will be cherished by children Shane (Teena) [Ailisa] and Heather (Oceana, Delfin and River). He will also be remembered by his sister Linda (Lawrence) plus many nieces and nephews, neighbors and special friends.

Lloyd was predeceased by parents Leonard and Marjorie Westerlund, wife Maxine, brother Doug, sister-in-law Joyce and in-laws George and Sadie Heatherington, Jim Rude, Vernon and Myrtle Heatherington, Dale and Marie Heatherington and Audrey Heatherington.

Heather, Shane and Teena would like to express a special Thank You to all of Lloyd’s caregivers during the last few years. What a crew we have in our rural community! The doctors, nurses, hairdressers, pharmacists, laundry and cleaning personnel etc. The list goes on.
