Hogan: William, August 7, 1935 – June 14, 2019

Bill was born in Calgary August 7, 1935, to William and Ellen Hogan. He died June 14, 2019, at the Oyen Auxiliary Hospital.

The family moved from Calgary to Oyen in March 1942 to his Great-Uncle Ed’s farm. He took his schooling first at Kirkwall and Lanfine, then Oyen. After grade 11, Bill attended Olds College. Upon completion, they wanted him to stay and teach woodworking during summer school.

Bill was part of many great memories. Family water fights that usually started at the dinner table on a hot summer day, skidoo toboggan parties, and camping out in the pasture after branding, all brought Bill much joy. He loved to dance and was a much sought-after partner at many wedding dances.

Bill loved everything about farming and ranching. From working the land in the spring and seeding through to harvest, Bill enjoyed riding in the tractor. Feed the cows through the winter and anticipating newborn calves in the spring kept Bill active year round. His favourite times were branding and silage time. He loved walking through the calf pens during the winter and watching them grow.

Bill was handy. Whether working with wood or metal, he could build or repair many things. When he was into what he was doing, you could often hear him whistling “Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain.” If you needed his help, all you had to do was ask and he would drop what he was doing to help you. Family members, friends, and the community were all grateful recipients of Bill’s time and talents.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and volunteered shingling houses, assisting with Mother’s Day breakfasts, and suppers for the Catholic Church. In his later years, woodworking and looking after his farmyard brought him much pleasure.

Bill was the favourite uncle to numerous nieces and nephews and a brother to nine brothers and sisters: Dick, Ellen, Gene, Maureen, Jim, John, Pat, Mary, and Ed.

He will be fondly remembered and never forgotten by those close to him.

Prayer Vigil Service was held June 20 and Mass of Christian Burial was held June 21 at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Oyen. Officiating Clergy was Fr. Newton Rodrigues. Anna Lewans was the organist, and special music was provided by soloist Andrea Wolf and Robbie Shields. Altar servers were Danielle Lapointe, Jolene Hogan and Grace Hogan. Readers were Susan Senkiw, Michelle Volk, Patricia Breum and Margaret Lapointe. Gift bearers were Garrison Lapointe and Quinton Lewans. Hymns were “You Are Mine” and “Ubi Caritas.” Pallbearers were Gordon Carr, Bob Carr, Thane Hogan, Kevin Hogan, Joe Hogan, and Penny Grover. Honorary Pallbearers were all of Bill’s nieces, nephews, close friends, and neighbours who cared and shared in his life.

Memorial tributes may be directed to Alzheimers Society, 833a Kingsway Avenue SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 2X5; Oyen & District Health Care Foundation, Box 150, Oyen, Alberta, T0J 2J0; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Following the funeral service, family and friends were invited to a luncheon hosted by Brad and Lori Toth in the Assumption School Gym.
