THE DELIA GAZETTE: Magic of Christmas

Even without the snow, the magic of Christmas is starting!

By Lonni Pedneault

On November 9, RCMP Aaron Cheung from the Drumheller detachment visited the Delia Drop In Centre for an informative session about current Frauds and Scams. There was lots of good information, but the bottom line is if you don’t know who is calling you, hang up and don’t engage!

The Remembrance Day Service held on Saturday, November 11, was well attended by Delians who will never forget. The Delia Historical Society would like to express much appreciation to the following for their help and support: Village of Delia for printing the program, the Delia Community Hall for donating the use of the hall, Carson Elliott, Mark Riewe, Dale Nelson, Heather Glazier from Black Diamond and Carrie Banman from Hanna for their help and Sergeant Harms for coming from Drumheller to partake in the service. The Historical Society has very few members, and all this extra help and support was greatly appreciated by the Society.

Delia’s Christmas Market was Sunday, November 12 and was a great kick-off to the Christmas season! The vendors and shoppers were preparing for Christmas, and the delicious food was provided by the U18 Hanna Colts! It was a great day for everyone! The winners of the Christmas Basket raffle was Roxy Gallagher and Sheila Karg won the fresh Turkey raffle. Congratulations to both!

Speaking of preparing for Christmas, Delia in Bloom volunteers started decorating Delia for Christmas on Monday, November 13. Huge shout out to everyone for their Christmas Spirit in this beautiful village! The wind made things more challenging than necessary, and finding the snow required to perfect the winter scenes was impossible, but it’s highly unlikely that we will have a brown Christmas! Even without the snow, the magic of Christmas is starting! The countdown is on; only 32 more sleeps!

On November 16, there was a ‘Farewell Celebration’ at the Drop In Centre to honour and say goodbye to Barbara Pagé, a well-loved Delia resident who was president of the Delia & District Senior Citizens, Vice President of the Delia Historical Society and Elks member. We all wish her an abundance of health and happiness in her new home in Edmonton and hope she doesn’t forget us in Delia!

On Friday, we appreciated the work of Keith Hansen, Dale Nelson and Terry Trefz, who put up a beautiful Christmas display in front of the Delia Drop In Centre. Toques off to everyone who decorates their homes as well!

Reminder: there will be a morning service at the United Church on November 26 beginning at 10:30 am, and everyone is welcome to attend.

The Ag Society meeting is November 27 at 7:30 pm at the Curling Rink, and new members are welcome.

On November 30, at 10 am, Karen Schneck of DFCSS will be visiting the Drop In Centre and is bringing a guest presenter from AHS. Chanel Annable will talk about seniors’ mental health; everyone is welcome to attend, and coffee is only $1.

Turkey Bingo! December 5 in Delia is the much anticipated annual Turkey Bingo. The event is hosted by the Elks, and several turkeys will be up for winning! We’ll see you there!

The Delia & District Seniors monthly meeting is December 7, and new members are always welcome. Come for the meeting, a cup of coffee, a game of cards and a social morning. Must be over 18 years old.

On December 10, Christmas Carollers will be carolling around Delia from a horse-drawn hay wagon. They will meet up at the United Church at 2 pm and warm up with hot chocolate and hot dogs afterwards. If you would like to hop on the hay wagon and sing along, the more the merrier!

The annual Christmas Dinner hosted by the Delia Senior Citizens is at 5:00 pm on December 13 at the Drop In Centre. Contact Carol at 403-821-1048 for tickets and watch for posts on Facebook.
