THE DELIA GAZETTE: Delia says farewell to John and Margaret Rogers

By Lonni Pedneault

November went by way too fast! In comes December, and spring is just a few short months away! Optimistic or what?

The Travelling Mabels kicked off their Christmas matinee here in Delia last Sunday, and people came from all around, including Hanna and Drumheller, to catch their show. Their sound was beautifully harmonious, and the little jokes between songs were cute and funny. The performance was very entertaining, and now they’re on their way to various locations around Alberta to spread Christmas cheer. If you get an opportunity, I recommend checking them out.

Sadly, Delia has to say goodbye to John and Margaret Rogers, residents of Delia for the past 35 years and members of Delia & Dist Seniors and Elks. They are taking their love of dance and no longer calling Bingo and moving away to Red Deer. We are sad to see them move away from Delia, but hopefully, there’s enough pull for them to come back and visit often! A Farewell Celebration was held at the Drop In Centre yesterday to wish them all the best in their new lives – but we will miss their sunny presence in Delia.

The Curling Club has begun the in-school program, the after-school youth programs and regular Thursday evening curling. Everyone (teams, individuals, newcomers) are welcome on Thursdays at 7 pm, and the Cheer Spiel will run Dec 29 – 31, ending in time for festivities, and they are working on early evening fireworks! Check with a director or watch for posters for details.

On Thursday, Nov 30, at 10 am, Karen Schneck of DFCSS is bringing a guest speaker, Chanel Annable from AHS, to the Delia Drop In Centre to visit with the seniors and discuss seniors’ mental health; everyone is welcome to attend, and coffee is only $1!

Turkey Bingo! Tuesday, Dec 5, in Delia, is the much anticipated annual Turkey Bingo. The event is hosted by the Elks, and several turkeys will be up for winning! We’ll see you there!

The Delia & District Seniors monthly meeting is Dec 7, and new members are always welcome. Come for the meeting, a cup of coffee, a game of cards and a social morning. Must be over 18 years old.

On Dec 10, Christmas Carollers will be carolling around Delia from a horse-drawn hay wagon. They will meet up at the United Church at 2 pm and warm up with hot chocolate and hot dogs afterwards. If you would like to hop on the hay wagon and sing along, the more the merrier!

The Annual Christmas Dinner hosted by the Delia Senior Citizens is at 5:00 pm on Dec 13 at the Drop-In Centre. This year the turkey dinner is catered by Day Lenfesty, and there are door prizes and an awesome raffle being drawn during the dinner. Contact Carol at 403-821-1048 for tickets (advance tickets only this year) and watch for complete information on Facebook. Only 60 tickets are available, and they go quickly so don’t delay! Deadline for tickets is Dec 8!
