SCHS hosts their first Princess Ball
By Joan Janzen
Seven princesses were dressed up and ready to welcome their young guests to the Princess Ball on Saturday, February 4th, at South Central High School in Oyen. Seventy girls, ages 3-10, came through the doors, decked out in their prettiest dresses, ready to have some fun.
Teachers Brittany Molzan and Shannon Hauck sparked the interest for this first-time event, which sold out quickly. Proceeds from the event will go towards upgrading the stage and sound system in the gym.
“It’s nice to have something going on in the community for little girls, and the parents are excited about it, too,” Brittany said. After all, it’s not every day that one gets to attend a princess ball!

The line-up of princesses included Merida, the free-spirited Princess of DunBroch, who taught the little princesses some archery skills. Princess Belle came from a small village in France to read to her young guests in the library. The girls enjoyed making fun art projects with Queen Elsa from Arendelle throughout the day. Princess Moana comes to SCHS all the way from Motunui, excited and ready to have fun water bottle bowling with the little princesses.
Princess Jasmine flew to Oyen from Agrabah on her magic carpet to do yoga with her guests. Tinkerbell also came flying in for the occasion, all the way from Neverland, excited and ready to do a bit of makeup, hair touch-ups, and nail sessions. Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) set her alarm and came all the way from Sweden for the festivities, which also included karaoke and bouncy castles. And, of course, there was a photo shoot for the beautiful princesses.
The princesses are all Grade 10, 11 and 12 students from SCHS, who worked in pairs throughout the morning conducting activities in various classrooms. A movie, games, snacks and a special crowning ceremony were held in the gym in the afternoon when the young princesses received their tiaras and gift bags.
Shannon Hauck was in charge of the meal for the princesses, parents and helpers. Students from the Foods 10 and 11/12 classes helped prepare the delicious macaroni bars, toppings, vegetables, fruit and sundae bar.
After the successful event came to a close, everyone asked if this would be an annual event. “It might be an annual event; we’ll have to see how it goes,” Brittany said. “We’ve also been asked about having a boy’s superheroes event.” So you never know what next year will bring, but whatever it is, one thing is certain. It will be a lot of fun!
Shannon agreed, saying, “It was a very exciting and fun event that is new to our school and community. Brittany has done an excellent job of planning and organizing a very unique experience for the girls.” Thanks to all the organizers and volunteers for helping make the event possible.
