Ready, Steady, Let’s Race
By April Heeg
The winter barrel series finals associated with the BCAS Winter Roughstock events occurred on Saturday, March 9 at the Crossroads Centre. Approximately 70 riders in three age categories made the series a huge success.
Saturday’s jackpot was open to all and any to run for day money. Series members could earn double points to spice up the race for standings.

All three age groups received fast-time halters made by Tyrone Maines and donated by Richard Houston. Grant Fletcher outran the rest in the Pee Wee category. Taylor Conners turned in a great run to take the Youth category. Stacey Trach smoked a run to take the Open age group.
Once the dust settled and the tractor raked the last set, points were totalled and prizes awarded.
Buckles were earned in 3 Divisions in all 3 Age groups.
PEE WEE buckle winners were:
1D – Kenlee Wilson
2D – Fallyn Duque
3D – Sawyer Houston
Ranchbaby Bibs and Jensen Red Angus sponsored gifts for each of the young riders who participated. The kids were thrilled with candy to end the day.
The Youth Buckles were won by:
1D – Kiptyn Thornton
2D – Charlie Walker
3D – Darcy McKnight
Open buckles were a hard-fought battle. The last race made the determination:
1D – Stacey Trach
2D – Alli Sauer
3D – Jamie Ross
The Youth and Open received prizes from Alie and Elsie Jewelry, Dana’s Mercantile, Cactus Country Market, Scott Colony, Klassy Co, Cattlemunns and Rustic Imagery Sketches. The very generous sponsors made so many awards possible.
A mohair cinch, handmade by Made by J and donated by Kristina Flanagan, was drawn from the series members and won by Izzy Walker.
The support and many volunteers who helped out all year made the job much easier. These days wouldn’t happen without help with entries to running the gate, picking up barrels and working to ground, kitchen staff and the Long Branch. I hope to see you all again next year.
Until then, keep them all standing and have fun.
