Oyen is looking for a ‘newcomer connector’
By Joan Janzen
The community of Oyen has created a new volunteer position, and are actively searching for a suitable candidate to fill the role. They are calling the position a “newcomer connector”. Communications Director, Nancy Christianson offered more details about the volunteer’s role.
“What this volunteer person does is connect new employees and residents of Oyen with other people in the community who have similar interests and demographics,” she explained. “We’re trying to retain employees, such as teachers and nurses, by strengthening their bond with Oyen and its residents.”
Although the position is not directly tied to the Town of Oyen, the Town will help provide information. “A business can contact the Town, and give the name, phone number, and details about their new employee,” Nancy explained. The information will be passed on to the person who takes on this new volunteer position.
The hope is that this will help fill a need that has been expressed in the community. She said new teachers in the community have said they would like to be more connected to the community. “This is pretty prevalent,” she said.
Now the word is out, posters are being displayed, and the position is being advertised. “We’re hoping somebody will be interested,” Nancy said. The successful candidate will be reliable, patient and caring. They also will possess a good knowledge of Oyen and the surrounding area and a knowledge of other cultures. On a practical level, they will need to provide their own transportation.
People in the community have said they’re on board, and willing to be involved in connecting with people who are new to the community. Now Nancy said they’re waiting to see what kind of response the volunteer posting will generate.
