Oyen and District Seniors Report

By Beth Symes

Thirteen members enjoyed a delicious potluck meal, and 12 people remained for the meeting on October 2. Lynda called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Joan Austin won the $26 50/50 draw. Then, the regular meeting items, minutes of the September 4th meeting, and the financial report for the month of September were presented.

Cheryl Getz presented her plans for hosting a new activity beginning on October 22, 2024, at the Seniors Recreation Centre for any Senior 50+.  The focus of this activity will be doing some kind of craft. This will be an opportunity for Seniors to gather at the Oyen and District Seniors Recreation Centre to do a Craft while they socialize with one another.  The day will begin at 9:00 AM and go through until 4:00 PM.  Those participating are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch along with their Crafting activity.  Cheryl has also set the next date for this activity to be November 26. After that, she plans on doing crafts on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. This activity will be free for members of the Oyen and District Seniors Association, and non-members will be charged $5.00 per time they attend.  Cheryl can be reached at 403 664 8688 if you have further questions.

Floor Curling also begins at the Oyen and District Seniors Recreation Centre on October 16 at 1:00 PM.  It is also an activity for any Senior 50+.  New rinks are drawn up each Wednesday from the people attending on that day.  Each rink has the opportunity to play two eight end games with a coffee break in between.  The curling season extends to the end of April.  If you have never tried floor curling and you are 50+, this group welcomes you to come and give it a try during the fall, winter and spring seasons.  For more information, call Beth at 403 664 2462 or Heather at 403 664 3854.

The Oyen and District Seniors also plan to host a Christmas Dinner for the Community on December 4, 2024. Preliminary planning for this annual event was done at the meeting. Further details will be given after our November meeting.

The Fun Night of September 27, an evening of games and socializing, was enjoyed by 22 people. The next Fun Night will be on October 25, beginning at 7:00 and extending until midnight. It, too, is an evening for those 50+ and their guests to gather at the Oyen and District Seniors Centre, where a variety of cards and table games are played.  The only requirement is to bring BYOB and a snack to share.  Fun nights are generally held on the last Friday of the month during every month, with the exception of July and August.  If you have not attended one, we invite you to come and try one out.  For further information, call either Lynda at 403 664  0908 or Beth at 403 664 2462.

Some further business items were discussed at the meeting. The Kitchen in the Recreation Hall has been inspected recently by Evelyn from AHS.  This inspection went well. Posters were done about this. Discussion about pickle ball was tabled until the next meeting. There was nothing new to report about further spending of the New Horizon Grant money. The Memorial Book discussions, which began at the time of the September meeting, are a work in progress.   Membership fees for the Oyen and District Seniors Association for anyone 50+  are now due and remain at $20 per year.  Memberships paid now cover the period between September 2024 and September 2025. We are inviting new members to join our Association for this new season.  The next potluck and meeting will be held at the Oyen and District Seniors Centre on November 6 at 6 PM.
