Lions Scholarships presented to three deserving students
Fred Beynon, Scholarship Committee Chairman and President of The Oyen Lions Club, was proud to present three $1000 scholarships recently to ambitious students from the area. Three were awarded this year as only one candidate applied last year.
Presley Bouvier is enrolled in the Animal Health Technology Program at Lakeland College which will assist her in eventually living in a rural area, and contributing positively to the important field of agriculture. During her time at SCHS, Presley joined the student council, was on the yearbook committee, and helped raise donations for The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter. Presley’s other interests include curling, sewing, and scrapbooking.
Avery Dillabough is attending The University of Calgary to take the combined Bachelor of Education and Kinesiology program. Her future plans include acquiring a Masters in Physiotherapy. Avery has been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, and has also assisted with scorekeeping for high school volleyball and basketball games, as well as working the booth, and putting scores on the scoreboard for the Badlands Badgers baseball games. Avery’s extra-curricular activities included being a dedicated Scorpions volleyball, badminton, and track and field athlete. She also assisted with numerous events to benefit her hometown of Acadia Valley.
Paige Siegal is pursuing a career in Speech Language Pathology. She is attending Medicine Hat College for two years first to earn a SLP Assistant’s Diploma, and then going to transfer to The University of Calgary to complete her degree in Community Rehabilitation. On completion of this she will apply to a Masters program so she can become a certified SLP. Paige’s primary extracurricular activity was figure skating. She spent many years perfecting her expertise, and ultimately became a Canskate Coach, so she could help younger students develop their skills. Paige also assisted with students’ union events, scorekeeping, and tutoring. She has also been involved with a kids’ summer camp, Meals on Wheels, Santa’s Hut, and the Oyen Indoor Rodeo. She also delighted youngsters as a Princess at The Princess Ball.
All the Lions members wish the recipients all the best as they pursue their studies, and learn from the communities they reside in, and have some fun along the way.
The Oyen Lions Club takes applications for two $1000 scholarships every year with the deadline being November 1st. Contact SCHS or Oyen Lions Club for the criteria. The Lions Club is always in need of new members and volunteers. There are opportunities for them to make more money to put back into the community, but more people power is needed. Please reach out to Fred Beynon, President, at 403-664-0883, if you can help out in any way.
