Hannah Wagstaff receives BCAS Scholarship

By Diana Walker

Last fall, Hannah Wagstaff, a 2023 graduate of South Central High School in Oyen, enrolled in her first year of a four-year Bachelor of Agriculture and Bioresources program at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon with a major in Animal Bioscience.

“After my undergrad course, I hope to become a large animal veterinarian and return to my rural area,” says Hannah.

She believes this area will need more veterinarians in a few years to continue serving our large area.

Cheryl Ball, representing the BCAS Scholarship Committee that includes Sharon Dahl and Diana Walker, congratulates Hannah on being one of the two recipients.

The eldest daughter of Quinn and Jamie Wagstaff of Sedalia, Hannah grew up on a cattle ranch and grain farm. Her love of cattle grew while building her herd over eight years in 4H.

“I’ve always loved helping my family on the farm,” says Hannah. “My youngest sister and I have grown a huge passion for cattle ranching. We are slowly buying my Grandma’s purebred Black Angus herd. I also love to rodeo—competing in barrel racing, breakaway roping and sometimes pole bending.”

Hannah is no stranger to Big Country Agricultural Society events. For as long as she can remember, she has shown cattle at the Crossroads Beef Expo. She has participated and volunteered at barrel racing and delivered Meals on Wheels on behalf of the society. Even though she is attending university in another province she comes home to help with the rodeo and participate in other events.

In a recent email, Hannah shared: “This semester I have a full course load again and have been keeping super busy. I am part of the U of S judging and rodeo teams. I have been coming home to help with calving, preparing for the Beef Expo in Oyen and attending the Crossroads Centre’s barrel jackpots!”
