HAND HILLS GRAPEVINE: Mother Nature is playing the payback game

By Marilyn Vredegoor

Hello, Hand Hills! Mother Nature is playing the payback game. Nice weather thru November and December leads to terrible winter weather in January. Here in the Hills, the temperature hovered over minus 36 all day Friday. The only saving grace was that it was sunny and no wind. The next two days are looking to be as cold. Things don’t want to run in this weather, the animals are wondering what hit, and as for me I am staying put! No school today and lots of activities have been cancelled. This is a tough cold snap. Spring seems a long, long ways off. Stay safe and stay home.

While you are at home, pick up those long, lost crafts that you have been wanting to get at. It will surely pass the time and it is good for the mind. You will love the end results.

As I was going thru some papers of my Mums’, I came across this article from the Hanna Herald from July of 1981. As news is scarce, I thought I would add it to my column. Lots of familiar names, hope you recognize some of them. I am assuming that this was written by Don Benedict when he was the Hanna Hills correspondent. Back then the news was hand written and hand delivered. No email for them. I am sure thankful for emails today, as this news would not make the deadline especially considering the weather. My predecessors had to do things a much harder way than I do but they were so dedicated to getting the news out that it was just part of the job. Thanks Don. Jean McDonald followed Don in writing the column and she too did a great job. On a few occasions I would pick up Don’s column on my way to town and also when it was too cold for Jean to get to the Herald I would stop and get her news report and deliver it for her.  On these occasions a visit was always part of the deal. A time that I loved. Mode of delivery is for you too figure out!

Remember the Annual Club Meeting on Thursday January 25th. We need your voice and input. See you there at 7 o’clock.

February 10th needs to be circled on your calendar. This is the Valentines Dinner and Dance. More details will come out after the meeting.

Till next week - think warm thoughts and stay warm.
