East Sounding Creek 4-H Report: Successful Communication Competition

By Coleman Norris

Breaking! Breaking! Read all about it! Sorry I have been an absent reporter till now, and it's not a lack of events from our East Sounding Creek 4H Club. We have been very busy. We started out our year in November with weighing in all the projects. This year we have 24 show steers, 18 Carcass steers, 17 Heifers and 6 Herd projects. Just thinking of halter breaking all these animals makes my body hurt. Our club has been out in the community at numerous events, we helped out at the Tree of Remembrance, Beef Expo, cleaning up Sedalia, New Brigden and Esther dumps.

We also had a very successful communication competition, this competition is one of the most difficult things for most of us, with sweaty palms and hearts beating the ones that could keep their composure was Danica Woods, Emma Westerlund winning Senior club speak-offs, Dylan Woods, Sadie Rude winning Intermediate, Ridge Foot and Jensyn Duque winning Junior Speak offs, these members should be so proud of themselves with some amazing speeches and impromptus. They then moved on to the District competition which included winners from the Hanna and Youngstown clubs. Danica Woods came in 2nd for the Seniors, Dylan Woods with 1st place in Intermediate and Ridge Foot winning 1st in Juniors.

These amazing members went on to compete in the Regional communication competition which includes winners from all over the Central Region of Alberta. Just to make it this far is something to be proud of. I just want to take this opportunity to congratulate Evy Miller, a local from Cereal, who belongs to the Youngstown Dryland 4H Club winning 2nd at the Regional Communication Competition moving on to Provincials and coming in 2nd place.

This young lady has some spectacular talent that most of us would love to have.

With a beautiful winter season this year the members had plenty of time to get drug through the little bit of snow we had, halter breaking these massive animals. When you’re 100 lbs soaking wet trying to pull on a 1000 lb + steer trying to make it follow you around, you could probably imagine what the outcome was most of the time. But we all seemed to get this accomplished in time for our Mock Achievement Day which was held during Easter break, where we learned how to groom and show our projects off. We just finished getting pictures taken with our show steers so be on the lookout for our 2024 catalogue where all our projects will be displayed for everyone to view before our show and sale on June 7 and 8 at the Crossroads in Oyen.

Next week we'll be busy finishing up with our Carcass projects, on May 15 we will be meeting at the Crossroads Centre with our finished steers where we will get a final weigh in and live evaluation before they head out to the Provost packers to be butchered. On May 21 we will get the opportunity to see our Carcass steer on the rail where we will find out who has the best finished steer which will be crowned the Carcass champion. For more info and highlights about our club please follow us on our facebook page, there you will also see all our projects displayed along with this year's donation steer which the proceeds this year going to the Ronald McDonald House. If you want more info and would like to donate to this year's donation steer please reach out to anyone in our club as well as Hanna and Youngstown clubs. Be sure to read the following week's paper for all the results of our projects. This is Coleman Norris saying “ do yourself a favour and put some beef on your plate!”
