Christ the Redeemer Schools Early Reading Intervention Program

Christ The Redeemer (CTR) Catholic Schools will increase the time trained specialists have to support students developing literacy or numeracy skills in small groups using new funding announced recently by Alberta Education.

CTR has trained teachers and Educational Assistants (EA) in the area of Early Reading Intervention programs that can often move students up one full grade level in a 16-week time period. The funding will help to increase deployment in this area. CTR will train teachers and EA’s to implement a made-in-CTR early numeracy intervention for the same 16-week period.

CTR’s Early Reading Intervention Program is intended to help students in kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2 who are experiencing difficulties with reading. By providing assistance in the primary years, it is hoped our students will become confident, independent readers in later years. Students that are referred to the program are provided opportunities to read a wide range of literature to develop confidence while practicing and reinforcing a variety of reading strategies. Each reading session also includes story discussion and writing responses which are important aspects in building reading comprehension. Students in Grade 3 receive additional supports to develop independent reading skills through an intervention program called Enhanced Reading designed for students in Grades 3 to 12.

CTR will also work to hire new Educational Assistants to help cover non-Early Reading Intervention (ERI) related supports.
