Affordable transportation available for Oyen and area seniors
By Joan Janzen
The communities of Oyen, MD of Acadia and Special Areas #3 now have an affordable transportation option for individuals aged 55 plus. It was all made possible through provincial funding in the amount of $242,000, which will be distributed over two and a half years towards the Rural Affordability Transportation Project. The Oyen FCSS, Oyen & District Handi-Bus Society and Communities in Action joined together to secure the funding.
“With these grant dollars, the Handi-Bus Society was able to purchase a new van and pay for expenses such as insurance,” explained Maryann Burns, Executive Director of Oyen FCSS. “Oyen FCSS has hired a part-time project coordinator to recruit more volunteer drivers, assist with intake, subsidy, coordination and scheduling, advertising, recording and reporting stats, and occasionally driving if needed.”
Rider fees and subsidies are based on a predetermined sliding scale and depend on the individual’s income and destination. This helps to make transportation more affordable and accessible for seniors, as well as helping seniors retain their independence while living in rural areas.
Individuals or groups can access transportation services for medical appointments, grocery shopping, government services, basic needs and social outings. Anyone who is interested is asked to call FCSS for more information, to apply for a subsidy or to book rides.
