Acadia Valley News, Mar 9
By Yolanda Kuhn
So, apparently they’re calling for 10-15cm of snow tomorrow. Don’t get me wrong, the moisture is great. But the snow is coming with a nasty cold wind. I feel like this is the longest winter we’ve had. I’m ready for it to be over already.
Ice to Dice was a great success last week. 23 teams curled all week. The 50/50’s were insane! They ranged from $450 to $4825 throughout the week. We even had a couple of individual winners. Derek Kauppinnen’s team (Derek, Louise Niwa, Tim Heeg, and Trent Skappak) won the trip to Vegas. The getaway package was won by Darci Skappak, The Rise Retreat pass was won by Wendy Longeway, Courtney Peterson won $1300 on the jackpot wheel, Gage Lemare won $750 with the best poker hand, Grant Brockman won $320 with the worst poker hand, Mckayla Niwa won a new curling broom, and Dean and Blake from Marengo bought themselves a rubber duck! Thank you to everyone who supported our event, the clubs who cooked the meals, Fred Beynon for driving the handi bus, all the businesses who donated, Dennis Vansickle for keeping the bar running smoothly, Laurie Burke for keeping the hall clean, Brent Peers for all the supplies from the store, and the Ice to Dice committee who did such an excellent job planning this event. See you all next year for the 25th Annual Ice to Dice, it’s going to be a big one!
Thank you to Jason Duchscherer who came down on Monday to teach the youth shinny kids some power skating skills.
Unfortunately, the curling plant is down again due to power issues. The W.P.S. Students will be having their elementary bonspiel tomorrow.
Many local Oyen Minor Hockey Teams are amid their end of season playoffs. Make sure to watch The Oyen Arena Schedule on facebook for local games.
With the colder weather the skating ice in the Arena is still holding as well. Make sure you get out and enjoy it before it’s gone!
Thanks for reading this week. I will leave you with a quote from Hal Borland, “No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.”
