The Rural Renewal Stream: Supporting Local Businesses and Strengthening Communities

As Small Business Week approaches, it’s an excellent opportunity to recognize the vital role that local businesses play in our rural communities. In areas like ours, finding skilled and committed employees can be a challenge. The Rural Renewal Stream, part of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program, offers a valuable solution by supporting local businesses in recruiting and retaining the workforce they need to thrive.

The program not only aids employers but also contributes to community revitalization by attracting newcomers eager to embrace rural life. Eligible employers can apply through their local economic development organization, and once approved, employees already in their roles who meet the program criteria can request an endorsement letter to apply for provincial nominations. Additionally, employers looking to advertise job openings can use platforms such as the Lynks Community Job Board and the Canada Job Bank to reach a wider audience.

Local businesses like the Canalta Hotel and the Cactus Corner Travel Centre have seen firsthand the impact of this program. Wendy Lawrence, Manager of the Canalta Hotel in Oyen, shared, “The Rural Stream program has been extremely beneficial to Canalta Oyen; the program has attracted several workers and their families to the area. For the first time in years, the hotel has been fully staffed, and we are able to meet the demands of the business. This program has helped to provide the hotel with some of the most amazing team members; they are hardworking and are contributing to the success of the hotel and the community.”

Similarly, the Cactus Corner Travel Centre has benefited greatly. “Cactus Corner Travel Centre is incredibly grateful for the support provided by the Rural Renewal Stream. Being in a rural community, staffing has always been a significant challenge for us. However, this program has been a game-changer, enabling us to overcome those hurdles and keep our operations running smoothly. Without it, continuing our business would have been very difficult. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Rural Renewal Stream for its ongoing support, not just for us but for all rural employers striving to thrive,” said Gurpreet Randhawa, for the travel centre.

If you’re a local business owner looking to enhance your workforce, now is the time to explore the Rural Renewal Stream. By joining, you can help shape our region’s future and contribute to a stronger, more vibrant economy.
