South Central Senior Boys Basketball: Scorps capture Provincial Bronze Medal
The South Central High Scorpions senior basketball team capped off an amazing season by winning the bronze medal at the Alberta Schools Athletic Association 1A Basketball Provincial Championship. The tournament took place from Thursday, March 16 to Saturday March 18 and had the best 1A teams in the province competing. The first game on Thursday had the Scorpions defeating Worsley High School by a score of 64-51. This was the quarter final game as the Scorpions got a bye in the first round due to their second-place ranking in the Province from season play. This put the Scorpions up against a very powerful team from Coaldale in the semifinal. The Scorpions played hard and kept it close, but the eventual Provincial Champions from Coaldale pulled away in the second half and won 98-42. This put the Scorps in the bronze medal game against E.H Walter School and saw them winning 74-69 in a very entertaining game.
The South Central High Scorpions finished the season with a record of 29 wins and 3 losses. In addition, to the bronze medal at Provincials, they won the gold medal at their home tournament, the Micheal Smigelski Memorial. Silver was the medal in the Drumheller tournament, gold at Ecole des-Hautes Plaines (Airdrie) and gold in Hanna. The team won the Northeast Basketball League Championship defeating Consort in the final. They were the silver medal winners at the South Central Zone Championship held in Rosemary.
