Rosebud Theatre presents the beloved family musical, The Sound of Music

As we celebrate 50 years of Art in the Valley, Rosebud Theatre is excited to announce its summer production, The Sound of Music.

Music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein III and book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Suggested by “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp.

Maria, played by Rosebud favourite Cassia Schmidt, is causing the Abbey far too much trouble. She just doesn’t belong. She escapes to a mountain meadow where the song she sings comes back in echoes from the surrounding hills. And as if in answer to her longing for something vital and new, she is sent off to be governess to Captain von Trapp's seven mischievous children. With youthful vitality and purity of heart, she teaches the children to sing, helping the family’s integrity and joy shine bright against the shadow of the rise of the Third Reich.

The all-star cast shines a spotlight on the extensive talent from Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA). Cassia Schmidt (FRSA 2011) is joined by 7 members of the RSA Guild, all of whom have developed impressive resumes since graduating. The show also features 4 current RSA students, 3 of whom are anticipating their Rosebud Theatre company debut. Guest artists include Vancouver's Ian Farthing as the militant Captain von Trapp and Calgary actors Katelyn Morishita and Brent Gill.

As the von Trapp family struggles and triumphs, they delight in unforgettable songs like “My Favourite Things”, “Edelweiss”, “Climb Every Mountain” and of course “The Sound of Music.” Themes of resilience and overcoming the threat of war emerge over the course of the performance while the underlying message of finding home, wherever home is, persists. The talented and accomplished cast bring new life to this timeless play and the quaint, rural setting of Rosebud allows for audiences to truly immerse themselves in the joyous experience.

The show runs until September 2nd, 2023. Tickets are $95 and include Rosebud’s famous buffet at the Rosebud Mercantile.  A summer musical for the whole family!
