By Diana Walker

Jace, 18, and Keldon Powell, 16, sons of Calvin and Haley Powell, have been around livestock all their lives growing up on their ranch near Youngstown. They attended Youngstown School from ECS to the end of the school term in 2020. For the past year they have been students of Hope Christian Online (PLSD).

Both boys have participated in most sports including baseball, Basketball and archery, were members of Dryland Beef 4H, and participated in rodeo at the High School, Provincial and Canadian levels and are now preparing to compete at the National level.

Jace competed in four events in the Alberta High School Rodeo Association—Team Roping, Tie Down Roping, Saddle Bronc and Steer Wrestling. He qualified for provincials in Olds June 4, 5 and 6 in both Steer Wrestling and Saddle Bronc. Jace won the average in steer wrestling that weekend, getting all three steers down, and won the Sunday go round with a smoking 4.7 second run.

Jace also managed to cover one of his saddle bronc horses and will be representing Canada in both events at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Lincoln, Nebraska that runs July 18 to 24.

Jace will carry on to compete in both events at the Canadian High School Finals Rodeo in Swift Current, Saskatchewan August 6 to 8 and then will be starting college at Central Arizona College by the end of August as a member of their rodeo team.

Keldon competes in both Team Roping and Tie down, as well as Lite Rifle Shooting. He tied for second/third overall in a Lite Rifle Qualifier at Provincials in Olds and will now represent Canada in Nebraska at the NHSFR as well.

Keldon is going into Grade 11 and will continue to compete at the High School Rodeo level and in the Chinook Rodeo Association.
