Museum Light Up Night a shining success

Hanna Museum is getting noticed these days. Their promotion of decorating the historic corner of Hanna resulted in a very successful “Light Up the Night” on Saturday, November 25. Over 150 people were in attendance between the hours of 5 to 7 p.m. to take in the beautiful Christmas Lighting displays.

Those in attendance were provided the opportunity to vote for their top three favourite displays and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate courtesy of Freson Bros. Voting proved to be difficult as each building appeared to be decorated to highlight their unique construction or purpose. More than one giggle could be heard as viewers passed the Youngstown Jail, where the local RCMP detachment chose to decorate the jail complete with the “Grinch” safely stored under lock and key.

Primarily viewed as being more active with tours during the summer months, the board members of Hanna Museum were looking at new ways to engage the community all year round.  One member had seen a similar idea promoted for a campground, shared the idea with the board and it was decided to “give it a try.” The response was overwhelming with great participation for those wishing to sponsor a building to decorate to those who are enjoying the festive displays.

The decision to host the event prior to the annual Chamber of Commerce Light Up Night was done in order to allow people to decorate earlier and the Museum still wanted to be able to participate in the Chamber parade. Having the event earlier also allowed people the opportunity to support both events.

Organizers are already looking to continue “Light Up the Night” on an annual basis. Next season will continue to be on a first come, first serve basis to give everyone an equal chance.

Selecting the top three displays was difficult. However, winner for the 2023 “Light Up the Night” were:

  • First – Church, sponsored by Sprinkhuysen’s

  • Second – Archive Building, sponsored by Lynks

  • Third – Bandstand, sponsored by Co-operators McLeod Agencies

The Hanna Museum is a non-profit registered charitable organization with a volunteer board of 18 dedicated members. Interested volunteers are welcome as it allows the board to consider additional events and projects in support of the museum.
