Day of Rural Women: Associate Minister Armstrong-Homeniuk
Associate Minister of Status of Women Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk issued this statement recognizing the 10th International Day of Rural Women:
"Today we highlight and thank women living in rural areas for their steadfast spirit, determination and passion. These women are farmers, small business owners, tradespeople, first responders and more.
"Rural women play a critical role in ensuring families around the world have access to nutritious food. According to the United Nations, women make up more than 40 per cent of the agricultural labour force in developing countries. Here in Alberta, a third of our farmers are women.
"With digital connectivity an economic priority, rural women in Alberta are increasingly turning to online resources to find farming solutions, engage with larger agricultural-related communities and reach potential customers. That's why Alberta's Broadband Strategy, a four-year commitment to improve access to high-speed internet in rural, remote and Indigenous communities, is vital. Funding for the first 50 communities was announced just last month, ending the digital divide in more than 10,000 homes across the province.
"Alberta's government has also made it easier for women entrepreneurs to access capital loan funds. It is my hope that this funding will enable women entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and encourage even more women to become successful in rural Alberta.
“I encourage all rural women to access the Women’s Hub, a one-stop shop for services and resources that can help women succeed at work, home and in the community.
"Rural women are integral to Alberta. Their hard work and dedication will continue to sustain our province into the future.”
